[Invited Talk] The perceptual consequences of vergence eye movements A brief review

نویسنده

  • Robert S. ALLISON
چکیده

Vergence eye movements are a key factor in stereoscopic depth perception. In this brief review I will outline work at York University on select aspects of the relation between vergence and stereopsis, sensory fusion and depth constancy.

Difference in Visual Processing Assessed by Eye Vergence Movements

Orienting visual attention is closely linked to the oculomotor system. For example, a shift of attention is usually followed by a saccadic eye movement and can be revealed by micro saccades. Recently we reported a novel role of another type of eye movement, namely eye vergence, in orienting visual attention. Shifts in visuospatial attention are characterized by the response modulation to a sele...

A Role of Eye Vergence in Covert Attention

Covert spatial attention produces biases in perceptual and neural responses in the absence of overt orienting movements. The neural mechanism that gives rise to these effects is poorly understood. Here we report the relation between fixational eye movements, namely eye vergence, and covert attention. Visual stimuli modulate the angle of eye vergence as a function of their ability to capture att...

Natural problems for stereoscopic depth perception in virtual environments

The use of virtual reality (VR) display systems has escalated over the last 5 yr and may have consequences for those working within vision research. This paper provides a brief review of the literature pertaining to the representation of depth in stereoscopic VR displays. Specific attention is paid to the response of the accommodation system with its cross-links to vergence eye movements, and t...

Oculomotor Systems and Perception

Understanding visual experience has long challenged the best of human minds, from the Ancient Greeks’ interest in optics to the study of visual perception by contemporary psychologists and neuroscientists. Today’s scientific study of perception seeks to understand the nature of our experience in terms of the underlying mechanisms by which it occurs. This text is the first to emphasize the role ...

Discharge characteristics of pursuit neurons in MST during vergence eye movements.

For small objects moving smoothly in space close to the observer, smooth pursuit and vergence eye movements maintain target images near the foveae to insure high-resolution processing of visual signals about moving objects. Signals for both systems must be synthesized for pursuit-in-three-dimensions (3D). Recent studies have shown that responses of the majority of pursuit neurons in the frontal...
